President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has been ruling Togo since 2005. His two terms should have ended in 2015 but in 2013 he changed the constitution to enable him to run again in 2015 and forever. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé’s family has been ruling Togo for 50 years now.
But there is nothing surprising about Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé’s behaviour. His father was also a dictator and murderer, having murdered the first president of Togo and toppling the second president.
On January 13, 1963, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, the father of Togo’s current ruler shot dead the first president of Togo Sylvanus Olympio in a military coup by non-commissioned soldiers. Eyedema was appointed army commander. On January 13, 1967, Eyadéma, then a lieutenant colonel and chief of staff, organised another coup against the second president of Togo Nicolas Grunitzky. He banned all political activity until he had founded a new organization, the Assembly of the Togolese People, as the only legal party.
According to encyclopedia Britannica, After Eyadéma’s unexpected death in February 2005, his son, Essozimna Gnassingbé was hastily installed as president by the military—an action critics characterized as a coup. After weeks of international condemnation, Gnassingbé stepped down and a presidential election was held in April. He was declared the winner of that election, which was initially certified by some international observers as free and fair but later marred as reports of considerable fraud emerged. The opposition refused to immediately concede defeat, and hundreds of people were killed and thousands fled from the country in the violent post-election aftermath.
This is Lungu’s new found friend in addition to Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni.
Be assured Essozimna Gnassingbé is here to advise Lungu on how to kill opponents
